ST. MARY MAGDALENE / RISEN CHRIST APPEARS TO MARY MAGDALENE Medal (H-111) Solid sterling silver with antique finish Cast in New Mexico, USA, from mid 19th century French original 13/16 x 11/16 inches 3.5 grams All saints medals now come with a ring (not pictured) so as to be worn St. Mary Magdalene was a follower of Jesus, present at Jesus’ two most important moments: the crucifixion and the resurrection. A singular figure of bravery and courage, she is specifically named in the Gospels as the first to testify to the resurrection of Jesus. St. Augustine called her the “Apostles to the Apostles.” Most modern scholars agree that characterizations of Mary Magdalene in Western Christianity as a repentant prostitute are unfounded. (Conflation with stories of Mary of Bethany and Mary of Egypt coupled with the importance of penitence in later medieval theology led to the creation of a composite Magdalene.) Today, she is enjoying a renaissance as an important early Christian Leader. In art she is depicted holding a container of ointment (as the unnamed sinner who anoints Jesus’s feet in the Gospel of Luke) or embracing the feet of the crucified Christ on Mt. Calvary. She is patron of Italy, penitent sinners, converts, and women. Her feast day is July 22nd. SAINTS MEDALS Saints medals focus the prayers of the faithful. Cast in sterling silver and yellow bronze from antique historical originals, our curated collection of over 50 medals includes the most beloved saints and Madonnas. The original designs date from the 16th to the 19th centuries and feature the finest in devotional iconography from Europe and the Americas. NOTE: Due to the nature of the hand-casting process, there might be slight variations in finish and detail from that pictured. Also, bear in mind that the photos enlarge the medals well beyond what is visible to the naked eye. Very rare 1 inch size, green and white glass enamel and sterling silver. Marked Sterling. Small nicks in line with vintage age. 24 inch chain with clasp appears to be sterling (does not react to powerful magnet), but not 100% sure. Note, clasp is large so you need to remove circular piece at end to get the pendant off the chain. This could easily be replaced for smaller clasp. Own a piece of 60’s/70’s surf culture with this beautiful and rare vintage Saint Christopher pendant.
